my bathtub is painted and the paint is staring to peal my husband and i were thinking about putting tile in the tub but i am not sure how to begin the process , Do i need to place something on the tub before placing the grout? what are the steps in making this possible

You would need to remove all paint and rub the bath tub with heavy grade wet and dry to get a fix between adhesive and enamel if the bath is fibreglass forget the idea. Tiling would be a nightmare because of the curves,but marbles would look mad and be easier to use for the purpose.
Agree with others that you will have as much success with the tile as you have with the paint on the tub. Look for a company that can come to your home and apply a new coat of porcelain on the tub, or change it out for a new one.
It's not going to happen! The water from taking a bath will make the tiles come up and if you use the stuff they use on mosaics for pool bottoms it would be cheaper for you to buy a new tub. Sorry!
sand down and clean the painted surface with white spirit
buy a good waterproof adhesive and grout
